HLTWHS005-Conduct Manual Tasks Safely (Personal Care Workers)
This unit deals with Manual Handling in the Health Care and Nursing environment, and focuses on the workers’ ability to carry out their work in a safe manner within a prescribed range of functions involving known manual handling routines and procedures.
This Manual Handling Training for nurses aims to build an understanding of the nature and type of injuries that occur from performing manual handling, the role and responsibility of employers and employees in relation to manual handling safety, and key aspects of the risk assessment approach to manual handling tasks. The training has a strong practical component focusing on safe manual handling practices for transferring patients from beds to chairs and vice-versa.

- Express – Pre-course online learning plus a short 30 minute practical assessment session

Entry Requirements
Participants must have the physical capacity to use appropriate equipment, posture and handling techniques to conduct a manual move and/or lift.

What happens at the course?
Assessment Activities
Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:
- Performance tasks -The assessor must observe the following performance task
- Identify a manual task involving risk
- Undertake risk assessment and complete a risk assessment form
- Prepare for the manual task
- Safely complete the manual task
- Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions. Model responses are provided later in this document. The student must complete all assessment questions.
